Hi ATBL (it's a long name ). I had the same problem, and got round it by using backdrops (with my pre-prepared images loaded into them), and then animated the backdrops to allow me to 'step' through the slides (Tutorial 21).
For just text, it's easiest to create the words on transparent PNG files and then use backdrops to place them in the set. You could also export the Powerpoint slides as a movie, then show the movie on a backdrop too.
Essentially, what I'm trying to say is you're going to have to get very familiar with using backdrops!
