This is my first attempt, and the dialoge goes on for about 45sec and the scene goes on for much longer. How do I specify where I want the movie to end?

Hi Judith
Go to Tools/Timeline
You will see two large diamond shapes on the timeline. One is the start of the film the other is the end. Drag the end marker to where you want the film to end.
