Just a quick question that popped up recently as a result of a bug in Muvizu 3D. The technically correct and optimised way to texture a model is to use a UV Map or ID texture as the option is called within Muvizu's object importer. However, for a quick video I find the work involved in doing this doesn't justify the end result. What do you think? Would you rather produce a technically correct and optimised ID Texture / UV map or just get your video done? Let me know what you think in the comments, thumbs up if you agree (or don't agree). Thanks for watching!

    • I had acutally meant this happens in Muvizu. Now you've got me wanting to try this Sketchup method. Sounds WAY easier!

    • If you are using Sketchup, right click on the textured face and go to texture > position. This will give you 4 tools to rotate, scale, skew and position your texture. Just scale it up until you get the number of repeats you want. If your not using Sketchup I'm not sure how to help :)

    • I guess I misunderstood the question or use a different method. Any time I've tried to texture a model within Muvizu, although the image does show, it shows really small and tiles 1,000 times. This didn't happen with a UV map, which as I stated I didn't enjoy making. Were there a simpler way, I'd be all for it.

    • How do you know it's better? Not trying to be smug here but, the end result is the video you are making and as long as you line up your textures / etc before importing it into Muvizu it just looks the same in the final video. Obviously if you are producing objects to share with other people the UV map is significantly better and easier for someone else to then use.

    • Thats very true Simon - how can we source more objects? Hopefully now that Muvizu lets you load objects directly from the site more will be uploaded and the library there will increase in size and usefulness. Google 3D Warehouse is pretty good too.

    • @Jamie I would, if I had one, put a texture on the back of the laptop too. On every surface actually...but that's just me :)

    • Every time I go to make the UV map I forgot how I did it last time. It's frustrating but the end result is significantly better.

    • I'm definitely in the 'just get your video done' camp. There obviously a lot of things to do besides just animating (sorry directing), some of which we can/have to supplement from sources outside of Muvizu. Textures/SFX/music are fairly easy to source but objects are less so , especially given the narrow set (1 = ase) of objects we can use. So my personal question would be 'how can we source more objects?'. ImRunningOutOfSpaceHereIThinkNeedsAForumQuestion.:)

    • I've had some luck using sketchup to export OBJ files and take them into blender, generate a UV map and then combine it with the ASE. Didn't quite work as expect (it was a dome though and a bit complicated) I've come across a Blender ASE exporter but I've not tried it yet.

    • Hmm... I think it depends on what the scene is and the effect you are going for. The laptop has a texture for the keyboard and the screen but its just a colour on the back of it to give the illusion.
